Hitting 40! La Classique 2016

La Classique Du Quebec hit the 40 year mark this year in Montreal, Canada and it seems like only yesterday we were all lining up in the “on deck” to dance at this incredible and fabulous event that still plays the most incredible music with terrific lighting and a fantastic atmosphere. I know some of you wonder why I refer to the past when talking about “La Classique” as we all call it now with love. I refer to the past because without a strong past there is no future and while most competitions are struggling to create it, “La Classique Du Quebec” has the most history of any event I know and it continues to create history with every year that passes.

"Thank You” Michael Chapman for hosting a fabulous competition weekend at The Florida Superstars Dancesport Championships. You always pay so much attention to decor and fantasy atmosphere, making spectacular pageantry as a competition should be. We were hosted in awesome surroundings, great food and drink, fun camaraderie and the best weather was there for a girl from Chicago. Loved wearing flip flops in February between my judging high heels! Thank you for that!
LaBlast: why did I start a dance fitness program?
By Louis Van Amstel
During all my years as a competitive ballroom dancer, my dream was to become a World Champion by emphasizing the ART of dance; winning by focusing on the dance rather than just the competition. I believe that dance speaks for itself and can be such a powerful medium.

A New Generation in New York: NYDF

Over the last few years we have seen many competitions transfer to a new generation of organizers and on this front none of these transfers have been more anticipated than the New York Dance Festival’s. Edward Simon has been the organizer of this competition for many years, but last year he transferred ownership to one of the USA’s most iconic competitive couples of recent years, Eugene Katsevman & Maria Manusova.

Platinum Dancesport, hosted by Igor & Polina Pilipenchuk, holds the distinction of being the closest competition to my home on the NDCA Calendar. In fact, from Igor & Polina’s spectacular hospitality suite at the Hilton Downtown Miami, you can see my apartment building! That said, you can perhaps understand why I am biased towards a winter competition in my home town. Even though the weather was a little chilly for us Floridians on the first day of the competition, those traveling from points north all told me, “you should see what it’s like where we live!” No thank you! The next day temperatures outside were back up into our winter ‘70’s and many of the competitors were able to take a break from dancing to explore downtown Miami or cross the causeway to South Beach.

And this year’s competition was no exception!
