BYU Brings Us to New Heights!
US National Amateur Championships 2016
Report by Keith Todd
Each year in March most of the country’s leading amateur and junior competitors make the long climb up the Provo Valley to the town of Provo and the Marriott Arena on the campus of Brigham Young University for the US National Amateur Championships. These championships are recognized by the NDCA and are granted to BYU by American Ballroom Company. To be sure it is a long trek, particularly for those couples from the East Coast, but nobody seems to mind.

A night of “Fantasia”
The last night of the United States Amateur Championships was like a night at “Fantasia,” the twinkling lights (cell phones) produced by the audience during the Viennese Waltz of the US Amateur Ballroom was as magical as the “Fantasia” movie, and as the couples danced to the 1,2,3 the audience waved from side to side giving us all a magical moment that could only be reproduced at BYU on a packed night at the Marriot Center in Provo, Utah.

I know it’s March when my students start stressing about the width of their dress straps. The United States National Amateur Dancesport Championships are hosted annually at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. It is nestled in a valley of snowcapped mountains on an immaculate campus brimming with clean-cut kids and the wholesome activity of ballroom dancing.

What an amazing competition! From the opening ceremony all the way to the end of the event the atmosphere in the ballroom was just electric. These young dancers were simply spectacular. It was truly a pleasure to watch them and to judge them.

Provo, is for me the best place to hold this event. The venue was filled with an enthusiasm that vibrated from the dance savvy, knowledgeable crowd. Combine this with the event’s first-class organizers, officials, and the fantastic convention center at BYU, this year’s Championship again provided another outstanding atmosphere for dance!
