New York Dance Festival – Professional Rhythm

A quarter-final took the floor for the Open Professional American Rhythm at this year’s New York Dance Festival. I will take this moment to rant slightly if I may. American Rhythm is supposed to be rhythmic and earthy looking before all else. I think we have REALLY gotten away from that idea and replaced it with too many stunts and gimmicks. I would love a clean and impactful approach to these ideas perhaps with less crawling around on the floor. At this point, I feel the only thing that matters about what leg action you are doing, is that you finish what you start. Ok I’m done, now onto the results.

From a semi-final, the final 6 were as follows:
Kusak-Sartori: This couple did a good job of showing a nice balance of many dance elements…rhythmic body actions, good use of feet and legs, a nice awareness of connecting with each other, interesting choreography. Looking at their marks, it wouldn’t have been a surprise had they placed higher. Well done!

Professional Open Rhythm at Maryland Dancesport

Six couples were recalled to the final from an energetic quarter and for me the biggest battle was between the top three couples. Left in the semifinal, but worthy of a mention were Rex & Rachel Jones who had a new look and a great night, Chen & Keller, Wayne & Simanekova who danced more strongly than the previous night.

Congratulations to Wendy Johnson, Sam Sodano & Mary Murphy for putting together another fantastic Holiday Dance Classic.
While the Open Rhythm did not have the large number of top couples that we like to see at this level event, the couples making the final still deserve sincere congratulations for a job well done.

Ohio Star Ball - Open Pro Rhythm

What can I say about the Ohio Star Ball being one of the largest events in the country running like a well-oiled machine from start to finish. The amount of talent that gathers at this event is exciting and totally electric for spectators and competitors alike.

The professional competition in the American Rhythm category was small enough. Only 11 pairs started in the semifinal. There is an advantage of such small competitions in that judges have the ability to look at and analyze couples more closely.

It’s 10 Out of 10 for Grand Nationals 2015!
Report by Keith Todd

There is always some thing special about a world championship and this year the Grand Nationals Championships was the proud host of the 2015 WDC World 10-Dance Championship. With the prestige a world championship instills into an event comes the responsibility of providing a first class venue and “championship” style experience for the couples arriving from around the world and their supporters.
