I believe last night was the first time we have seen a Top Studio award that included a cash prize. Emerald Ball gave this in the name of Jean Marc Casanave who passed away earlier in the year and was a great friend of the organizers.
Pro-Am Latin scores coming soon.

It’s a Smooth World!
Last night Emerald Ball became a Smooth World as it seemed that every Smooth couple in the world (read USA) showed up to contest this final.
There seems to be a cycle to competition dancing with each style coming to the fore and producing the best finals in turn. Right now in 2016, to us, the Smooth is that style and last night we saw every major player throwing their dice. So where did those dice land?

5th in all dances went to Yegor Novikov & Anastasia Smirnova. They had some 1st places in all dances except tango and had enough judges scoring them 4th or 5th to keep them ahead of 6th placed Travis & Jaimee Tuft in all 4 dances. Travis & Jaimee received 1st places in all 4 dances. While these last 2 couples were not really challenging the first 4 on paper, in reality this was a final of 6 great couples. We can’t wait for the next one!

In a very closely fought race, Laura Shooks w/ Alexander Voskalchuk won the Open B, scoring 2,3,1,2,1. Unsurprisingly, with an event this close there were no majorities of 1st places here. The Runner-up was Amy Wang w/ Sergey Kiselev 1,2,3,1,2. 3rd Brynda Insley w/ Martin Reinbold 3,1,3,5,3; 4th Audrey Paek w/ Ronen Zinshtein 6,4,2,4,5; 5th Julie Zhao w/ Denis Kutepov 4,5,6,3,4; 6th Susan Sidman w/ Simeon Stoynov 5,6,5,6,6; 7th Michelle Peng w/ Mikhail Avdeev 7,7,7,7,7; 8th Patricia Schneider w/ Nick Cheremukhin 8,8,8,8,8.

There was a very strong semifinal of gentlemen C competitors in the Open C gentlemen’s division. The winner was Liang-Te Hu w/ Olga Tsikalyuk 2,1,1,1,2; 2nd was Mike Brown w/ Anna Oblakova 1,2,2,2,1; 3rd Satoru Toga w/ Grace Wang 4,3,3,3,4. Linda Huntress w/ Andrea Stefano won the Open S2 and Deborah Errico w/ Dariusz Michalski won the S1.

We thought the Open Smooth Scholarships were of very high quality, and the C was danced over 4 rounds –a great event!

Mayo Alanen moved up to 1st place in the Open B, his student, Aiyesha Dey was the winner placing 1,1,1,2. Aiyesha did receive the majority of 1st places in the dances she won. With 2,2,2,3, Celia Chou w/ Erminio Stefano was the runner-up. This was the first time we have seen Celia compete in this style and it was an impressive opening. There were a couple of shaky transitions but considering the brevity this was an excellent start. We were a little surprised that both these ladies received some lower half scores. The winner of the VW was Sirinda Sincharoen w/ Max Sinitsa and she placed 3rd overall 3,3,3,1. We thought she had a great event and could have taken a few more 1st and/or 2nd places in some dances. 4th spot went to Steelman w/ Travis Tuft 4,5,4,4; 5th Susan Sidman w/ Gleb Makarov 5,4,5,5; 6th Joanne Tatum w/ Mariusz Zakrzewski 6,6,6,6.

In the evening it was the turn of the Pro Rising Star competitors and we saw all 4 styles. In a straight split, Florida won both American styles and California won both International.

The Ballroom was also very close with a 3 to 2 decision to determine the winner of two Californian couples. Stefano DiBrino & Bianca Zubrowska placed 1,1,2,2,1 to take the win from Christian Radvan & Kudelko 2,2,1,1,2. Youiy Nartov & Sarika Hudson took all the 3’s.

There were no majorities of 1st places in any dance in the Rhythm but Maksym Lototskyy & Sarah Haworth were the overall winners placing 1,1,3,1,3. This was actually a Rule 11 tie with runners-up, Ilia Abdullin & Barakov who placed 2,2,1,2,2. Riccardo Papi & Sabrina Moretti were 3rd 3,3,2,3,1.

"Shine Bright Like a" …….. Emerald!
It hardly seems as if a year has gone by, but the Dance Beat Team is back at the LAX Hilton for a full week (Monday to Monday) of the Emerald Ball – certainly one of the nation’s largest competitions.
The Organizers, Wayne & Donna Eng, added more time to their packed schedule this year, beginning much earlier on Tuesday than in previous years – this with the hope of adding some breathing room and the ability to present all the awards for the pro-ams on the floor. So far this is working, although yesterday’s schedule was still completely full.
As of this writing (Thursday morning) we have completed the pro-am Rhythm divisions and begun both the Smooth and Ballroom. Last night saw the Open Scholarships in the Rhythm style and certainly many of the nation’s best were vying for the win.

The Open B fell to Gwen Bourque w/ Chris Johnston. Gwen won all dances and all with a majority of 1st places except bolero. Gwen also won this division last year, but with a different professional as Mr. Johnston was judging last year. 2nd went to Sophia D’Angelo w/ Ilya Reyzin 2,2,2,2,2. Kia Malone w/ Eddie Rivera was 3rd with 4,3,3,3,3 and Joanne Tatem w/ Mariusz Zakrzewski was 4th 3,4,4,4,4. Susan Sidman was 5th once again in this division 5,5,5,5,5 and Sharon Power w/ Jason Daly was 6th 6,6,6,6,6.

This year for the first time that we can remember, Emerald Ball is falling on the same weekend as Wisconsin State in Milwaukee and we wish adieu and safe travels to a few hardy souls who left us here in Emerald to hop on a plane to Milwaukee to catch both of these great competitions!
