LeRoy Walters Passes

It is with a terribly heavy heart that we must once again report the death of a US Dance Icon.

LeRoy Walters passed, Friday, January 8th. Leroy was in hospice and had been battling illness for some weeks.

LeRoy came from a “dance family” and began as a competitor and co-owner of the famed Walters Dance Studio in Kansas City. He was one of the most prolific officials in the dance world, serving as master scrutineer or chairman of judges at countless events over the years, and known for his quiet efficiency.  He was also an owner of the famed Heart of America Championships, that grew to become one of the largest events in the USA.

On a personal note, as the music director at many competitions, I am usually the first official in the ballroom early each morning – but not if LeRoy was also officiating! LeRoy was always there first! He had a very dry wit that all us who work the “podium” at competitions appreciated. This has been a very tragic 12 months in the dance world and LeRoy will always be missed, as will all our other friends lost.

Our sympathies go to his wife Ginny, sons Marc & Ray, daughter Denise, grandchildren Avery, Bradon & Brett and to all his family and friends. More details as soon as we have them.
